About Maryland
Maryland is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic area of the United States. It borders Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania to the south and west, Delaware to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware to the east. Maryland has a total area of 12,407 sq. miles (32130 km 2), making it the 8th smallest state in terms of land area. However, its population of 6,177.224 makes it the 18th most populous state, and the 5th most densely populated. Maryland’s capital, Annapolis, is located in Baltimore. The state’s largest city is Baltimore. The western part of the state is dominated by the Appalachian Mountains. The central part of the state is mostly Piedmont. The eastern part of the state is the Chesapeake Bay and shares a border with Delaware. The southeastern portion borders the Atlantic Ocean. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after Henrietta Maria, the French-born queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland, who was known then in England as Mary.
